well we very quickly found ...  the particular thing for instance that a cell is a detector of a feature in the outside world             it just was more complicated than that,   a particular cell's output is determined by a whole set of variables,    so that if we change for instance a color,    in the input to a cell,    thru the visual system of course,    we might find      -         a particular cell sensitive to green      -         that same cell might be sensitive to the orientation of lines at a particular angle.     another variable might be the intensity or luminance of that line;      or how many lines;      or what the spacing between the lines is
